Meet Jai’Len Josey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jai’Len Josey.

JAI’LEN JOSEY, a 21-year-old metro Atlanta, GA native, made her Broadway debut as Pearl Krabs in the critically acclaimed and Tony award-winning “Spongebob Squarepants Musical” in 2018. Her off-Broadway credit includes the award-winning “Secret Life of Bees.” And her Regional credits include critically acclaimed Witness Uganda. Voice-over credits include Nickelodeon’s “Nella The Princess Knight,” and PBS Kids’ “Pinkalicious & Peterific.” She has also performed, written and co-produced a jingle for Olay’s first ASL digital commerical, “Rhythm of Olay” ASL Musical. A proud winner of the 2014 Jimmy Awards, Jai’Len is currently focused on her first love… writing and producing music. She is excited about the September 2020 release of her debut EP, Illustrations, which she wrote and co-produced. Forever thankful to God, Jai’Len is grateful to her praying warrior family and friends. Instagram: JailenJosey.

Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle has been switching from Broadway to commercial music. Typically, black Broadway actors have an unusually challenging struggle on Broadway. That challenge is often magnified by common musical theatre stereotypes as being too “campy” or not relatable. Those stereotypes draw harsher criticism from music industry professionals.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
What I’m most proud of is that I’m using live instrumentation as the foundation of my debut EP. It’s my goal to bring live music back to the forefront.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In 5-10 years, I believe that the music industry is going back to “real” singers and live musicians. The shift is already happening.
